POMPEII SURROUNDINGS: MOUNT VESUVIUS AREA
Visiting Ancient Pompeii is a wonderful experience, but there are many other things to do in Pompeii and Hotel del Sole is an excellent starting point to move forward the natural, archaeological and gastronomic attractions all over Mount Vesuvius area.
Mount Vesuvius itself overlooks the entire surrounding area which takes the name from it.
You can reach the best known volcano on earth by car or bus and enjoy a walk to the crater or through the National Park.
HERCULANEUM AND OPLONTIS
If Ancient Pompeii isn’t enough to satisfy you archaeological hunger you have valiant options. Herculaneum above all was destroyed by the same eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and now it discloses built up area made of magnificent Villas owned by rich Romans. Consider that in Villa of the Papyri a whole ancient library was discovered.
Oplontis, instead, deserves a visit for its enchanting Villa Poppaea which belonged to the beautiful Nero’s wife. Its structure is perfectly preserved and let us know luxurious life style and otium (laziness) practice during vacations.
NATURE, CRAFTSMANSHIP, TYPICAL PRODUCTS
If you are interested in craftsmanship you have to visit coral workshop in Torre del Greco, where artisan will show you their centuries-old experience in working the red coral.
But in our overcrowded area you can find an oasis of piece at the Royal Palace in Portici which was built by important architects – such as Vanvitelli – and boosted the construction of many other rich Villas along the Golden Mile, between Naples, San Giorgio a Cremano, Portici, Ercolano and Torre del Greco.
Then the best moment of the day… dinner! Restaurants and pizzerias offer Italian and Neapolitan culinary tradition dishes based on special local products, starting from the cherry tomatoes from Mount Vesuvius.
So you cannot limit your journey in Pompeii to the archaeological site.
